![]() Executive function is control by the prefrontal cortex and that part of the brain doesn’t finish developing until 25 years old! Simply put, a child’s brain is not ready to independently remember a routine.įurthermore, all our brains are less effective at recalling spoken language than words or pictures. Your children get distracted easily, right? It’s because they lack executive function, a group of skills that include recalling information, managing impulses, and creating and executing a plan. In order for a routine to be really effective, it also needs to have a visual support – this means it needs to be written down. ![]() Routines are great, but they don’t automatically increase independence. Routines are powerful for families: they build independence while reducing stress. When a child’s brain can go on autopilot for routine tasks like getting ready for school, other areas of their brain can be at work for imagination. Instead of using mental energy figuring out what to do next or tracking down lost shoes, routines allow our brains the capacity to think freely. Routines get a bad reputation for inhibiting spontaneity but in truth, routines reduce decision fatigue. Last, routines are so powerful for developing creativity. Thus, routines allows them to direct all their brain power towards developing frustration tolerance or problem solving skills because they aren’t struggling to recall what comes next. For our children who struggle with big feelings and emotional regulation, having routines for daily tasks reduces the demands on their self-control. ![]() Next, routines are powerful because they free up mental bandwidth for bigger challenges. ![]() When children are able to take care of small chores like making their bed and self-care tasks like brushing teeth, they believe they are capable and can develop more responsibility. Similarly, routines build independence and competence. Instead of living in fear of yelling and through the chaos of misplaced items, they gain trust things will happen in a manageable way. The predictability reduces anxiety and stress for children. You’ll feel less guilty that you’re not constantly barking orders.Īnother reason that routines are powerful is they make children feel secure. When children know what to do next and have internalized it, everything flows better. It’s the key to making sure there is enough time for learning – children need to automatically know how to turn in their completed work, gather necessary supplies, and pack up their backpacks at the end of the day. I’d spend the first few weeks of school developing and teaching routines to my students. I taught 2nd and 5th grade for 11 years prior to becoming a mom. If you want to have independent children, quit yelling at your children, or have a less chaotic household, there is an answer that is both easy and effective: create better routines for your children.ĭisclosure: This post may contain affiliate links as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. The good news is it does not have to be this way. You give a direction to your children, and then after a few reminders, you end up raising your voice and losing your temper. My first question is always “What are your routines for your children?” I still hear it today – from friends and in parenting Facebook groups. This is the #1 concern I heard from parents when I was a teacher.

![]() Rushes are represented by three genera in the area: Juncus, Luzula, and Oreojuncus. This resource is designed for anyone interested in learning to recognize rushes in the Carolinas. The tool is optimized for delivery on most major browsers, whether mobile or desktop. Notes are provided to focus new learners on particularly helpful aspects of morphology. The tool is highly visual, facilitating identification through illustrated keys, as well as browsing by image or name. This resource is designed for anyone interested in learning to recognize the common ferns of our state. The dichotomous keys provided are heavily illustrated and may be expanded or collapsed to reveal or hide additional content such as images, illustrations, maps, rarity status, and habitat descriptions. It treats all federally listed plant species (and the single listed lichen) of North Carolina and their congeners. This resource is designed for environmental professionals and agency biologists. Rare plants of North Carolina: Federally listed species and their congeners Constructive feedback is always appreciated. The work is mobile responsive, but due to some large images, may at times load slowly on some mobile units. However, given that the keys are complete, we hope that users will find it nonetheless useful and bear with us as we fill in photographic gaps over time. Thus, the work presented at this time is admittedly incomplete. We recognize that, at present, our task is not complete and users will find a number of taxa without a full complement of images. ![]() ![]() We strive to include images of bark, twigs, leaves, reproductive organs, and distribution maps for all species within our scope. This work treats the native and naturalized species of trees occurring in North Carolina. What's the easiest way to identify a tree? A dichotomous key of course. ![]() Although microplastics are often detected in the environment, the risks they pose are debated and largely unknown. A formal definition for the lower size boundary does not exist, but particles below 1 μm are usually referred to as nanoplastics rather than microplastic ( Koelmans et al., 2015). Microplastics are generally characterised as water-insoluble, solid polymer particles that are ≤5 mm in size ( Bergmann et al., 2015). We conclude that more high quality data is needed on the occurrence of microplastics in drinking water, to better understand potential exposure and to inform human health risk assessments. Fragments, fibres, film, foam and pellets were the most frequently reported shapes. The order in globally detected polymers in these studies is PE ≈ PP > PS > PVC > PET, which probably reflects the global plastic demand and a higher tendency for PVC and PET to settle as a result of their higher densities. However, only four out of 50 studies received positive scores for all proposed quality criteria, implying there is a significant need to improve quality assurance of microplastic sampling and analysis in water samples. Microplastics are frequently present in freshwaters and drinking water, and number concentrations spanned ten orders of magnitude (1 × 10 −2 to 10 8 #/m 3) across individual samples and water types. Further, we summarize the findings related to microplastic concentrations, polymer types and particle shapes. We review and propose best practices to sample, extract and detect microplastics and provide a quantitative quality assessment of studies reporting microplastic concentrations. Studies of occurrence in wastewater were also reviewed. ![]() ![]() This includes an assessment of microplastic occurrence data from river and lake water, groundwater, tap water and bottled drinking water. Accordingly, we assessed the quality of fifty studies researching microplastics in drinking water and in its major freshwater sources. However, there have been questions regarding the quality of these occurrence studies since there are no standard sampling, extraction and identification methods for microplastics. This presence has triggered discussions on possible implications for human health. Microplastics have recently been detected in drinking water as well as in drinking water sources.
